Strengths-based Team Development Program (example)

Engaged by the Education Quality and Assurance department of a leading RTO (Registered Training Organisation) to develop and facilitate a range of individual and team strengths* discovery and development activities. The project outcomes were to:

  • increase team members’ strength self-awareness and how to leverage them for stronger outcomes.

  • improve teamwork through strengths sharing and partnerships.

  • support leadership development through leadership strengths coaching.

  • debrief the employee survey results and setting team goals for priority areas.

*more about strengths-based coaching and development

The outcomes were delivered through:

  • In the weeks before the all-staff professional development workshop, participants received an invitation to complete the Gallup CliftonStrengths survey and a series of tailored strengths activities aimed at supporting the initial discovery of their strengths.

  • To support leadership development and the introduction of a strengths-focused leadership approach, line managers participated in strengths leadership coaching. In these individual sessions, the debriefing of the manager’s individual Gallup CliftonStrengths report took place. This personalised approach encouraged deeper reflection, supporting greater self-awareness and targeted leadership goal setting.

  • A two-day professional development workshop was developed and co-delivered with the team’s Director. Through a range of tailored activities, participants further explored and shared their individual strengths and discussed possible strengths partnerships with colleagues, gaining a greater appreciation for the strengths of the team. Additionally, the debriefing and review of the employee survey results took place, inviting participants to explore how personal strengths could support the team’s employee engagement priorities, leading to greater goal setting accountability across the team.

  • As a result of the strong engagement participants demonstrated through the workshop, strengths coaching was offered to high-performing team members. This allowed participants to further engage with their top strengths, and explore ways in which those strengths could be used to support their development priorities.

  • At the completion of the project, feedback was sought from participants, which includes the comments and testimonials demonstrated on this page, as well as qualitative feedback following the staff professional development workshop, which shows a strong majority of the 24 participants agreed or strongly agreed that:

    • The workshop allowed me to further connect with my colleagues. (96%)

    • I was able to deepen my understanding of a colleague’s strengths. (88%)

    • The workshop allowed me to understand how I work with others. (83%)

    • I was able to consider how I can build strengths partnerships with colleagues. (83%)

    • I was able to consider how I can support the employee survey action planning. (88%)

    • The facilitator was knowledgeable. (100%)

Strengths coaching testimonials

“ I'd like to thank you for the one on one sessions you conducted with my managers. All found this time with you very beneficial and have continued to use the skills and techniques you have gave them in managing their teams and their teams workloads. The sessions provided my team members the opportunity to reflect on how they work and what had been holding them back to set goals for future development. Particularly, we have had team members reassess their approach to work (and their careers in some cases) and seek further opportunities in management or in higher duties within the organisation specifically as a result of the one on one sessions they had with you.” - Director

“The strengths analysis report showed me a lot of things I didn’t know about how I work, this is invaluable information to understand myself. Fran was supportive, knowledgeable and provided great resources to explain the strengths categories and how I could use them to achieve some strengths that I didn’t have.” - Toni

Team development workshop testimonials

“The large workshops helped bring the team together and discover how best we can work together. The time you spent with everyone to unpack their strengths and look at how they are perceived within the organisation and what they do well has improved rapport within the team. In addition, our employee feedback survey results have since improved considerably.” – Director

“I liked that the workshop was inclusive of everyone and engaging. Learnt that my strengths support that of others, that everyone’s strengths support an effective team.” – strengths workshop participant

“I would highly recommend engaging with CliftonStrengths – very informative and the opportunity to respectfully engage with each other.” – strengths workshop participant
